A Step-by-Step Guide to uni-assist and University Applications

Most German universities use uni-assist to pre-check international applications before they even reach the admissions committee. Getting this stage wrong is one of the most common — and most avoidable — reasons applications stall.

What uni-assist actually does

uni-assist verifies that your foreign qualifications are comparable to German equivalents and forwards a standardized assessment to the university. It does not make the admission decision itself — the university still decides — but a bad uni-assist assessment can end your application before a human reads it.

The application sequence

1. Check whether your target university uses uni-assist. Not all do — some handle international applications directly.
2. Create your uni-assist account and select your program(s). You can apply to multiple universities that use uni-assist in a single submission where supported.
3. Upload certified documents. Transcripts, degree certificates, and language certificates typically need certified copies and translations — uncertified scans are a frequent rejection reason.
4. Pay the assessment fee and submit before the semester deadline — usually mid-July for winter intake and mid-January for summer intake.
5. Wait for the VPD assessment, then track your application status directly with the university.

Common mistakes we see

• Submitting translations that aren’t from a certified/sworn translator
• Missing the deadline by assuming “submission” and “complete documents received” are the same thing
• Applying to a program whose language requirement doesn’t match your certificate level

Don’t forget scholarships

Many applicants focus entirely on admission and forget to check scholarship deadlines, which are often earlier than the university’s own application deadline. DAAD and university-specific scholarships are worth checking before you finalize your shortlist.
